You can marry in a religious building that is approved for worship and marriage if it is located within the Registration district where either of you lives.
You can also marry in a religious building outside your district if it is the usual place of worship for one or both of you.
In addition to contacting the religious official at your chosen venue you will need to give notice as part of your legal formalities for your marriage.
Please ensure that the building has an Authorised Person who can register your marriage. If it does not, you may need to arrange for a Registrar to attend. If this applies to you, please contact us on 0116 3056565 as soon as possible so we can check availability and guide you through the next steps.
Same-sex marriage
For same-sex couples, even with the introduction of the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Act 2013, religious freedom means that each religious organisation can decide whether to conduct same-sex marriages. You will therefore need to check that the religious organisation permits same-sex marriages and that the building is formally registered for them.
